Few engines carry the nostalgic allure of the 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8. Renowned for reliability, torque, and simplicity, it’s the heart of one of the coolest 4×4 conversion overland rigs we’ve seen lately—a 2002 Ford E-450 Super Duty camper van that recently crossed the auction block on Cars & Bids. We’re pretty much not surprised that the high bid of $28,000 didn’t meet reserve. If you’re into vans—real vans—you’re going to dig this one.

Low-Mileage 7.3-liter Power Stroke Under The Hood

This van started life as a fourth-generation Ford E-Series cutaway van, originally serving as an ambulance. These heavy-duty vans were known for their durability and endless upfitting options. Today, it’s been reimagined as a capable 4×4 off-road camper platform that blends rugged durability with modern versatility.

Under the hood, the factory 7.3-liter Power Stroke V8 delivers 215 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque through a dependable four-speed automatic transmission. With just 72,600 miles on the odometer and a clean Oregon title, this low-mileage workhorse still has decades of adventure ahead.

    4×4 Conversion And Off-Road Upgrades

Thanks to a professional AJ’s 4×4 Vans conversion, this E-450 Super Duty camper van is far from ordinary. Key upgrades include a Dana 60 front axle, manual transfer case, and FOX shocks with a steering stabilizer, ensuring confidence on rocky trails or muddy backroads.

It rolls on 17-inch Ion wheels wrapped in Yokohama Geolandar mud-terrain tires, offering excellent traction in demanding conditions. The green and black Raptor Liner exterior not only enhances durability but also gives the van a rugged, adventure-ready presence.

    Adventure-Ready, Cavernous Interior

Among many other things, the inside of the van features a diamond-plated floor, custom cabinets, and a custom center console. Comfort features like air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, and an aftermarket head unit add convenience for long drives.

Room For Further Camper Van Customization

What makes this E-450 particularly exciting is its potential. The current setup provides a functional, durable base, but there’s still plenty of room to take the build further. Enthusiasts could add a full camper interior (with a sleeping platform, galley kitchen, bathroom, and storage systems for bikes and gear), solar panels, auxiliary batteries, and roof racks for serious off-grid storage. Insulation and climate control upgrades would make it a true four-season expedition rig.

Whether you envision a minimalist hauler or a fully self-contained overland home, this van is ready to be tailored to your exact adventure style.

This Super Duty Camper Van Is A Dream

Although this 2002 Ford E-450 Super Duty 4×4 camper van didn’t sell at auction, it represents a dream platform for overland adventurers and diesel fans alike. With its rad 7.3-liter Power Stroke, serious off-road hardware, and endless customization potential, it’s a rare find that could become the ultimate diesel-powered camper van for the right adventurer.
