Allianz has reportedly already been trialling the use of EVs, and this year has ordered a total of 160 new battery electric vehicles – bringing the firm’s total number of EVs up to 307, or 28 per cent of its overall fleet.

The company has detailed what these trials looked like: its procurement team oversaw a series of testing initiatives geared towards examining the viability of full EV adoption by the fleet. This reportedly included an ’employee panel’ for test driving and benchmarking vehicles, as well as assessments of adapted vehicles for drivers with accessibility needs.

All of this has accompanied the roll-out of a new internal driver app which is designed for both company drivers and their line managers; it’s designed to record business mileage as well as track car journeys and emissions, although it’s not clear how much data is gathered from drivers to do this. Allianz calls it part of its sustainability strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 70 per cent per employee by 2030.

The transition to EVs itself is linked to Allianz UK’s membership of EV100, the electric fleet network which attempts to drive forward electrification of corporate vehicles.

Bethany Thomas, Head of Sustainability at Allianz UK, said: “This move is an important one for us and underscores our commitment to sustainability, not only as an insurer but also as an employer. To support our customers across the country we need our employees on the road in vehicles fit for purpose that also align with our net-zero strategy.”
