Apparently, we jumped the gun a couple of days ago writing about the markets where BYD has been expanding. It’s been growing in Nepal, Malaysia, and Cambodia, and it has also begun exporting vehicles from Thailand to Europe. Now we also have news that it has entered Argentina. It has brought the fully electric BYD Dolphin Mini and BYD Yuan Pro to Argentina. It has also brought one plugin hybrid to the market, the BYD Song Pro DM-i.

Before going further on the news, I have to strongly recommend that you read this piece from Larry Evans on why being a leader in emerging markets like this is such a big deal: “BYD’s Opportunity to Establish Brand Preference in the Developing World.”

Getting back to the news, it’s worth noting that BYD does see Argentina as a key market for the company’s growth plans in the region — despite being a bit late to enter it compared to other markets in South and Central America. Argentina is a big country, of course, with a population of 46 million, an annual light-vehicle market of about half a million vehicles, and the greatest football (aka soccer) player of all time, Lionel Messi. How is that last point relevant? It is not. Though, BYD does have a habit of sponsoring big football tournaments and teams. Maybe they’ll pay Messi to be in an ad for them. Messi seems to be doing ads for all kinds of things these days here in the US.

Deng Yuan, BYD country manager for Argentina, says that the company plans to roll out more plugin vehicles in the country in coming months and years. Additionally, they are working on growing the EV charging infrastructure there.

Well, that’s basically the news for now, but for much more on BYD’s expansion and progress, roll through our BYD archives. Perhaps Juan will also do a deeper dive into BYD’s competitiveness in the Argentinian auto market soon.
