When you talk about global two-wheeler giants, India’s TVS Motor Company belongs near the top of the list. The brand has been building motorcycles and scooters for decades, not just for its home market but for riders across Asia, Africa, and beyond. In India, you’ll see a TVS scooter on almost every block, and that kind of presence gives the company a level of street smarts that few manufacturers can match.
Now TVS is betting big on electric mobility. Its first major push came with the iQube, a well-rounded e-scooter that’s slowly gaining ground in India. But the company isn’t stopping there. Enter the TVS Orbiter, an all-new model designed to make EV commuting simple, practical, and affordable.
At about Rs 99,900 (roughly $1,135), the Orbiter is one of the most accessible electric scooters TVS has ever offered, and it’s packed with more tech than you’d expect at that price.
So what makes the Orbiter interesting? For starters, it gets a 3.1kWh battery pack that TVS claims is good for about 100 miles on the Indian driving cycle. Real-world numbers will be lower, but even around 70 miles is enough for a day’s worth of commuting. Power comes from a hub-mounted motor with two modes: Eco for maximum range and Power for quicker getaways and easier overtakes. Top speed is a modest 42 miles per hour, so this is a city scooter through and through.
TVS clearly thought about rider comfort, too. The Orbiter rides on 14-inch front wheels (with a 12-inch rear, depending on spec), which means better stability and fewer pothole jitters compared to the smaller wheels on many budget scooters. The seat height is an easy 30 inches, and the spacious saddle leaves plenty of space for a passenger. Under the seat, you’ll find storage big enough for two helmets, which is a huge plus for urban use.

On the tech front, the Orbiter punches well above its weight. The dash is a color LCD with call, message, and navigation alerts. Through a connected app, you can access crash and fall alerts, geo-fencing, time fencing, and anti-theft notifications. It even supports OTA updates, so features can be improved down the line. Convenience features like cruise control, hill-hold, and reverse assist make the scooter feel more premium than its price tag suggests.
That raises the big question: could something like this work in the US? In dense cities, the answer is probably yes. Students, commuters, and delivery riders could all benefit from an affordable EV with enough range for daily runs and storage for gear. At just 247 pounds, it’s light and approachable for new riders, and the low operating costs would make it an attractive option in places where parking is tight and gas prices sting.

But the hurdles are real. US scooter culture isn’t nearly as strong as in India or Southeast Asia, and many American riders expect freeway speeds. The Orbiter’s 42-mile-per-hour ceiling keeps it confined to neighborhood streets and urban grids. Then there’s the matter of homologation, dealer networks, and after-sales support—areas where Honda, Yamaha, and Vespa already have the advantage.
Even so, the Orbiter shows how far electric scooters have come in terms of design and usability. If TVS ever decides to bring it across the Atlantic, it could carve out a small but meaningful niche in college towns and big coastal cities. At the very least, it’s proof that affordable EVs don’t have to feel barebones, and that’s a win worth celebrating.
