As temperatures rise, more customers will head to the counter for help with air conditioning repairs. In the latest episode of Counter Culture, Justin Fisette, senior product manager at Bosch Mobility Aftermarket, highlighted common summer issues. He also offered insights to help parts professionals guide their customers.
Diagnose Air Conditioning Repairs with Smart Questions
For counter professionals, diagnosing what a customer needs starts with smart questions. “One is simply, how is the system working?” Fisette said. “Is it blowing a little bit of cold air or is it simply hot air?” A quick inspection under the hood can also reveal signs of leakage or damage.
Use the Right Tools to Handle Refrigerant Issues
To handle refrigerant-related concerns, Fisette said parts stores should stock manifold gauges and A/C machines. These should be capable of recovery and recharge. These tools help ensure proper pressure and identify leaks. They are especially important for older systems or newer, tighter-tolerance designs.
Understand the Shift to R-1234yf Refrigerant
Another big shift: the widespread use of R-1234yf refrigerant. It’s now in most top-selling vehicles, including Ford F-150s, CR-Vs and Camrys. Counter pros should note that this refrigerant is pricier and more environmentally friendly. This shift is driving regulatory changes.
“Instead of selling that $100 to $150 can of R-134a, a can of R-1234yf is going to be about $500 to $600,” Fisette noted. Some states are even phasing out quick-recharge kits in favor of professional-grade solutions.
