The new joint venture aims to strengthen the European value chain for battery production, specifically for next-generation solid-state batteries. These are widely regarded as the technology of the future, as they offer higher energy density, faster charging, greater range, and improved safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. This is achieved by replacing the liquid, often flammable electrolyte in the battery with a solid, ion-conducting material.
Argylium will develop the materials required for these solid-state batteries. These materials will be sulphide-based and used exclusively in all-solid-state batteries (ASSB), which operate entirely without liquid components.
The joint venture builds on the successful operation of a solid-state battery pilot line in La Rochelle by Syensqo, as well as over a decade of technology development in its Paris laboratory. The Axens Group contributes its expertise in process design, industrial scaling, and the global operation of inorganic chemistry plants. Additionally, the research centre IFP Énergies nouvelles (IFPEN) is involved, having conducted extensive research into oxide- and sulphide-based materials for years.

Argylium plans to collaborate with leading European research institutions, automotive manufacturers, advanced battery producers, and energy technology partners to establish a sustainable and competitive solid-state battery industry across Europe.
