With the last Focus assembled a couple of weeks ago, Ford is effectively fresh out of regular cars. Or is it? The Mondeo soldiers on in China, where the Blue Oval is even giving the large family car a nip and tuck for 2026. After its public debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show, the facelifted model goes on sale later this week in China, where it will be offered exclusively as the Mondeo.
It’s worth noting that the Mondeo is also sold in the Middle East under the confusing Taurus moniker. However, the car is more Mondeo than Taurus, given its smaller footprint and downsized engines. Confusing name aside, at least some markets are still getting a Ford that’s not a truck, SUV, or minivan. Sure, there’s the globally sold Mustang, but that’s a niche product.
The 2026 Mondeo is a Changan Ford product, developed in China and built locally. This model debuted in early 2022, so the timing feels right for a facelift. We’re glad to see the split headlights gone, replaced by a single cluster that gives off a Mustang-esque vibe. Another abandoned design trend we won’t miss is the front LED light bar.
Since this is only a facelift, the profile carries over unchanged, retaining the fastback-like roofline and flush door handles. Ford has designed new two-tone 21-inch alloy wheels and kept the contrasting black upper body section. At the rear, the taillights maintain their size and shape, though the inner graphics have been tweaked. The third brake light beneath the badge also adopts a more intricate look with interrupted lines. New Crimson Red and Ocean Blue paint finishes round off the exterior updates.

Overall, the 2026 Mondeo is a handsome car we wouldn’t mind seeing in North America, where the Fusion ended production in 2020. Europe’s nearly identical Mondeo was discontinued in 2022, around the same time China introduced this fifth-generation model. Why has Ford (mostly) abandoned cars? To “get out of the boring-car business and into the iconic-vehicle business,” according to CEO Jim Farley. For reference, the Fiesta was also deemed “boring,” prompting its retirement in 2023.
Circling back to China’s Mondeo, the 2026 version retains its screen-heavy layout with a massive 27-inch 4K display dominating the dashboard. A separate 12.3-inch digital cluster sits within the same glass panel. Thankfully, not everything is touchscreen. New for 2026, the separate controls below the central air vents include physical rollers and a few buttons for quick access without digging through menus.
Ford has also updated the “floating” center console to accommodate a wireless charging pad for two smartphones. Elsewhere, China’s Mondeo runs the latest SYNC+ infotainment system with a more powerful Qualcomm chip, a smarter voice assistant, and support for over-the-air updates.

Under the hood, buyers can choose a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 193 horsepower or a larger 2.0-liter unit with 257 hp. Alternatively, the hybrid setup based on a 1.5-liter engine delivers a combined 284 hp, with all Mondeo versions in China sending power to the front wheels. Gasoline models use an eight-speed automatic, while the hybrid employs a CVT.
We expect these same updates to carry over to the Mondeo Sport, a blend of crossover and fastback formerly known as the Evos until last year. Neither model is expected to go global, but Ford is reportedly planning to launch new cars in Europe later this decade. Meanwhile, rumors suggest a four-door Mustang sedan is also in the works for America.
