As trade tensions between the US and Canada flare up again, General Motors and partner Posco have announced an indefinitely pause to the second phase of their cathode factory in Bécancour, Quebec, prompting Vale to cancel a CA$325m (US$230m) nickel sulfate plant that would have supplied the project. Quebec’s Economy Minister Christine Fréchette blamed a global slowdown affecting the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry for the pause.
