Forget about your average hot rod. Imagine a sleek 1928 Studebaker Commander body riding high on air suspension, powered by a massive 12L CAT Diesel engine. That’s exactly what one dedicated builder, Snapper, created in his own two-car garage.

The Birth of the CAT Diesel Heart

The journey began with a forgotten treasure. As Snapper explained, “My dad bought the body at a flea market in Illinois and he brought it back and it sat in our barn for like 10 years.” Eventually, the body found its way to Snapper, who had a wild idea brewing. He envisioned a classic look with modern truck underpinnings and serious power. The heart of this vision became a  12-liter CAT Diesel engine sourced from a 1995 International twin-screw tractor.

    From Semi-Truck to Showstopper

Snapper took the entire frame from the donor tractor, cutting off 25 feet to make it the right size for the Studebaker body. He also integrated the truck’s air brakes and air suspension system, giving the vintage ride a modern, adjustable stance. Surprisingly, despite the substantial CAT Diesel under the hood, the finished truck boasts a balanced 50/50 weight distribution. The build was completed in an astonishing nine months, all within the confines of a regular home garage.

    Seeking Expert Advice

Being a furniture salesman by trade, Snapper wasn’t a seasoned diesel mechanic. To overcome this, he took a decidedly unconventional approach to gain the necessary knowledge. “I’m not a diesel tech. That’s not what I do.” He said. “But I found out where the service manager for Caterpillars drank beer on Thursday nights. So I went down to the bar on a Thursday night and I introduced myself,” he added. This chance encounter led to invaluable advice and guidance throughout the project.

A Labor Of Love With A Powerful Heart

The finished “Snapper” is a head-turning creation that combines classic styling with the unmistakable rumble of a 12L CAT Diesel. As Filthy Rich of Deboss Garage described the reactions they got on the road, “It never really gets old. Everybody just thumbs up and waving and smiling. You can’t you can’t see this and not smile.” This Studebaker is the perfect reflection of its builder’s wild idea. It’s what happens when a furniture salesman with a vision decides to build a hot rod by getting technical advice at a local bar.
