Vancouver, British Columbia — Drivers can now hand over the wheel to Hyundai Mobis, the world’s sixth-largest automotive parts supplier.
On June 11, the company announced a new rear safety control technology, which takes active control of a vehicle and uses defensive driving technology to predict the movement of vehicles to its rear. Hyundai Mobis’ technology utilizes rear-side radars and front cameras with driving control technology to alert drivers when a rear vehicle is too close.
Drivers using the Smart Cruise Control function on the highway will be alerted by a beep or visual warning on the cluster when the vehicle behind them is 10 metres away or less. The vehicle will automatically increase its speed to maintain a safe distance from the rear vehicle after a prolonged period. This function utilizes cameras to ensure driver safety, with rear side radars mounted to the car’s rear bumpers detecting vehicle movement and a front camera for the lane and vehicle ahead to assist in safe acceleration.
Safety technology designed to prevent rear-end collisions is often not advanced enough for vehicles to control themselves, but Hyundai Mobis’ technology equips vehicles to change distance autonomously. Rear-end collisions made up 21.1 percent of all traffic collisions in Canada in 2021, making it the most common type of collision. Hyundai Mobis is developing a lane-changing function as well as an acceleration control function enabling the vehicle to speed up on its own.
