There are two tools I never go into the backcountry without: a knife and my multitool. The pairing can solve about 99% of all issues you encounter, whether they be your own fault or Mother Nature-induced. But even they can be overkill at times.
While you’d never catch me without a knife, apart from when I’m flying—and I don’t even like to do that—most multitools, even the ones skeletonized, add weight to your pack. That’s weight that could be used for more snacks like Uncrustables, water, or other gear to keep you warm or dry. Weight is thine enemy when you’re out for a long rip or quick camp.
Leatherman, the purveyors of all the best multitools and some killer knives, understood that. And the company understood that some folks want the lightest of light things. That’s why the brand built the OPNR, a $10, three-tool, key-ring multitool that could help you get going when things hit the fan. So long as things haven’t gone completely pear-shaped…

The three-in-one multitool actually hits a lot of the cornerstones of what you’d need when you’re out trying to fix something in a hurry, as the prybar/screwdriver, along with the package opener, hit a lot of the main things. The screwdriver, especially, as even though it’s purely a flat head, flat heads work for Phillips heads, too, as well as a plethora of other parts that often break or need accessing. I’m thinking of all the pop and twist rivets on my Can-Am side-by-side in particular.
Now, Leatherman does say it’s a four-in-one, but the company counts the key ring as a tool, and well, I don’t. That’s ridiculous, though I could see using the twin holes—stop it—in conjunction with paracord to hoist things. And, again, it’s $10. You can’t get anything these days for $10, but you can get this, and it’ll just sit on your key ring or in your pack until the day comes when you need it or forget your other tools. Then you’ll be singing its praises, as I’ve done with my multitool and knives many a time.
