Ionity is once again tapping into Spain’s Moves III programme to accelerate the deployment of high-power charging infrastructure across the country. The Germany-based HPC network operator has submitted applications for over €6 million in public funding to support the construction of more than 20 new locations, significantly bolstering Spain’s long-distance EV corridor coverage.

According to Ionity, each of the planned sites will feature an average of six charge points, each capable of delivering up to 350 kW. With this level of output, vehicles can gain hundreds of kilometres of range in just 15 to 20 minutes. The expansion effort spans more than ten Autonomous Communities and deliberately targets regions with relatively low EV penetration or limited infrastructure.

The company has already secured grant approvals in several Autonomous Communities. These include Catalonia (via ICAEN), Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, the Basque Country (through EVE), the Valencian Community (via IVACE), Castilla y León, Galicia (via INEGA), and Andalusia (through the regional Energy Agency). Additional applications are still under review in Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, and a second round in Galicia.

Ionity also highlighted that part of the rollout is designed to facilitate cross-border traffic. This includes connecting strategic locations near national borders to better integrate Spain into the broader pan-European HPC network.

Moves III launched in 2021 and expanded by 400 million euros in December 2022 to a total budget of 1.2 billion euros. With further increases in 2024 (1.55 billion euros) and the now added 400 million euros, the funds allocated to Moves III have increased to 1.735 billion euros. Ionity states that, to date, €876 million has already been allocated to the Autonomous Communities, who are responsible for issuing final grants.

Moves II initially ran out at the end of last year and was reinstated by the Spanish government in April. Albeit retroactively. The programme also offers subsidies for the purchase of private and commercial electric vehicles.
