Earlier this year, Tesla announced plans to discontinue both the Model S and Model X. The plan is to pivot to increased production of robots. Before they bow out, however, Tesla plans to produce a limited-edition version of each, which it’ll dub the Signature Series.
According to MotorTrend, the cars get unique design elements, are full-spec Plaid trims, and are invite-only if you want to buy one. They likely won’t come cheap, either, given that Tesla has already marked up the prices on the remaining S and X inventory.

Reports suggest that these limited-edition final models will feature unique Signature Series styling elements. There will be gold exterior badges, Plaid seat badges and piping, and the Model S even gets gold brake calipers.
Inside, you’ll also see a plaque on the dash that shows your vehicle’s number in the limited production run. Tesla will reportedly produce 250 examples of the Model S and just 100 examples of the Model X.
If you’re hoping to buy one, you’ll need an invite from Tesla to do so. Rumor has the price of each one in the $150,000 to $160,000 range. That represents a rather healthy markup over the current $130k for a fully spec’d Model X Plaid.
These Signature Series cars will, however, arrive fully loaded. Each one will feature the Luxe Package. This includes free lifetime Supercharging, four years of maintenance, and what Tesla calls Full-Self Driving.
Motor1’s Take: Love Tesla or hate them, the Model S changed the automotive landscape. This is a car that forced the hand of most other automakers and pushed them to catch up to what Tesla had created.
We’re not sure that pivoting to robots is a strong play, but Tesla sells far more Model 3s and Model Ys than the larger S and X. So sales of those models should continue just fine.
