There will be no surprise here. People in the US rushed to buy electric cars in the 3rd quarter before the $7,500 US EV tax credit was disappeared, and that means there were a lot fewer people on the market to buy an electric car in October. That’s just how it goes. As time goes on, EV sales will build up again, but if someone was thinking about buying an electric car in the past two months, they would have tried to buy one in September if they were paying any attention.
With October sales numbers coming in from a couple of automakers now, we can see how much of a hit the US EV market is seeing.
Here are numbers from Kia:
- EV6 — 508 sales, down from 1,732 in October 2024 and 2,116 in September 2025
- EV9 — 666 sales (ominous, I know), down from 1,941 in October 2024 and 3,094 in September 2025
Here are numbers from Hyundai:
- IONIQ 5 — 1,642 sales, down from 4,498 in October 2024 and 8,408 in September 2025
- IONIQ 6 — 398 sales, down from 837 in October 2024 and 814 in September 2025
- IONIQ 9 — 317 sales, down from 0 in October 2024 and 1,075 in September 2025
So, not great. Not good, even. However, even in the worst month we can imagine, electric cars are still being sold. Let’s see how much the market can recover in November, December, and onward.
