Maserati Grecale Folgore gets range boost and battery preconditioning

After around two years in production, Maserati has refreshed the electric version of its mid-size SUV, the Grecale. While the Italian Stellantis brand emphasises in its press release that the revised version combines “passion, innovation, and versatility”, the updates primarily bring the model up to the technical standard typical for the segment.

The most significant new feature is the “AWD disconnection system”, which allows the front axle to be disengaged. When only minimal power and torque are required, the Italian SUV switches to rear-wheel drive within 500 milliseconds. In permanently excited synchronous motors, the rotating permanent magnets can cause drag losses in the stator when the front motor is not in use. This additional resistance must then be overcome by the rear motor, increasing energy consumption. To address this, Maserati now uses a clutch to disconnect the PSM on the front axle.

The system is managed by the vehicle’s traction control, which uses sensors and algorithms to analyse numerous parameters in fractions of a second, including brake temperature, driving mode, road gradient and the activity of driver assistance systems.

Because the front motor is completely decoupled, Maserati’s disconnect system significantly improves efficiency and range. For the 2026 model year, the WLTP range increases to 580 kilometres, compared with a maximum of 501 kilometres previously. Given the substantial 105 kWh gross battery capacity, this figure is still modest. Power consumption decreases from 23.9–27.8 kWh/100 km to 20.9–25 kWh/100 km.

Performance figures remain unchanged. When both axles are powered, the two electric motors deliver a combined output of 410 kW and 820 Nm of torque. The 2.5-tonne, 4.87-metre-long SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed limited to 220 kph.

Maserati has also enhanced the charging route planner by adding battery preconditioning, ensuring the pack reaches optimal temperature before fast charging. With the improved charging curve, the updated Grecale Folgore saves valuable time on long journeys. Peak charging power remains at 150 kW, enabling a 20 to 80 per cent charge in around 29 minutes. For comparison, its competitor, the all-electric Porsche Macan, can charge at up to 270 kW, replenishing from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 21 minutes, depending on battery size.

For the first time, the Grecale Folgore also includes a dynamic range display showing the maximum distance possible with the current charge under real-time conditions. Maserati has complemented these technical updates with six new exterior colours and an expanded range of personalisation options.
