In an interview with the British publication Auto Express, MG revealed that the company is planning to “explore new segments” with a fully electric C-Segment SUV. David Allison, MG UK’s Head of Product and Planning, stated that the vehicle will compete with the Renault Scenic, Volkswagen ID.4 and Nissan Ariya, and will presumably be called the MGS6 EV. This implies that it will find a place between the MG S5 EV and IM6 in the lineup.

Not much was revealed in terms of what technical underpinnings or design choices we can expect; however, Allison emphasised that the car will be “aligned with the MG S5 EV,” rather than follow the design choices of the IM5 and IM6. MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor, registered new vehicle designs in Europe in March, which clearly indicates the design direction, as well as filing the trademark application for the name ‘MGS6 EV’.

To compare, the MG S5 EV features a 49 kWh battery as standard with a range of 340 km. A larger battery variant is also available for up to 480 km of range. It can be charged with up to 120 kW on a DC fast charger and runs on a 125 kW electric drive system in the basic version (170 kW for the higher-priced variants). According to SAIC, the basic version manages the sprint from zero to 100 kph in 8.0 seconds, while the higher-end models only need 6.3 seconds. It currently starts at a price of £28,495 in the UK.

No clear time plan has been established for the presentation or market release of MG’s upcoming electric SUV; however, in the interview with Auto Express, it was said that the publication should not “expect MG’s alternative to the ID.4 to arrive here for at least two years.”
