When a dedicated puller decides his LBZ Duramax pulling truck needs more firepower to stay competitive, the challenge extends far beyond a simple rebuild. Customer Nick Filler walked into Miller Engines with a common dilemma in the pulling world: How do you take an already capable LBZ Duramax pulling truck and transform it into a podium-contending machine without sacrificing the reliability that keeps you running consistent passes all season long?
Matt Miller knows this challenge intimately. The owner and sole employee of Miller Engines has built his reputation on understanding exactly what competitive pullers need from their engines, earning him multiple features in our Diesel of the Week series for his exceptional builds. Miller developed his passion for creating horsepower at a young age, influenced heavily by his father’s involvement in truck pulling. Growing up around that world, Miller frequently visited his dad’s engine builder and found himself fascinated by the process of transforming stock engines into competition-ready powerplants.
Miller Engines operates from the small town of Saylorsburg, PA, where Miller has spent the last six years building both diesel and gas engines for customers across the country. After attending vocational school for CNC machining during high school, Miller pursued his engine building education at the School of Automotive Machinists in Houston, TX. There, he completed the school’s engine block and cylinder head course before working at several different shops around the country. Miller eventually returned to his hometown to open his own operation, where he deliberately avoids limiting himself to specific engine types. However, Duramax engines consistently rise to the top of his workload.
The foundation of this 2.6 Class LBZ Duramax pulling engine starts with components designed to handle the extreme stresses of competitive pulling. Miller selected a Callies billet crankshaft to replace the factory piece, understanding that the violent shock loads generated during pulling events demand the superior strength and durability that only billet construction can provide. This crankshaft connects to a set of Carrillo connecting rods, which Miller chose due to a proven track record in high-stress applications where engine speeds and cylinder pressures reach levels far beyond street driving.
Miller fitted the LBZ Duramax engine with custom Diamond pistons engineered specifically for this application. The valvetrain receives attention through Manton valve springs and pushrods, components that Miller trusts to maintain proper valve control even when the LBZ Duramax reaches peak performance levels during competition.
AMSOIL Signature Series 100% Synthetic Max Duty Diesel Oil
The heart of this build centers around a custom camshaft profile designed to optimize the power delivery characteristics that pulling demands. Miller ported the cylinder heads himself, a service that has become one of his specialties at Miller Engines. The ported heads flow significantly more air than stock, allowing the LBZ Duramax to breathe more efficiently throughout its operating range.
Miller reinforced the block with billet main caps that can withstand the forces generated from pulling. ARP hardware secures critical components throughout the engine, providing the clamping force necessary to keep everything tight under extreme conditions. A keyed oil pump ensures consistent lubrication pressure, critical for an engine that will experience sustained high-load operation.
The fuel system upgrade centers around Exergy components, with both fuel pumps and injectors chosen to support big power levels. Miller coordinated the fuel system sizing to work harmoniously with the airflow improvements and internal engine modifications, ensuring the engine receives proper fuel delivery across its entire operating range.
Filler’s goal of upgrading his existing pulling truck required Miller to consider not only the immediate performance gains, but also the long-term reliability needed for a full pulling season. Every component choice in this engine build reflects the balance between maximum performance and durability required for competitive success.
The completed 2.6 Class LBZ Duramax delivers the enhanced performance its owner sought with approximately 1,100-1,200 horsepower on tap – enough power to put up a serious fight in pulling competition, while providing the consistency needed for championship runs.
