Sway bars—also called stabilizer or anti-roll bars—don’t always get the spotlight they deserve. Without them, your customer’s vehicle would suffer in both ride quality and handling. That’s why regular sway bar inspection should be part of every suspension check.

Size and Setup
OEM engineers must balance handling and ride comfort when selecting sway bar size. Vehicles must meet federal safety standards for stability. That means OEMs can’t focus only on off-road or track performance.
Engineers place sway bars close to the wheel, typically on the lower control arm. This setup pushes the tire down with more force during turns.
They also consider the vehicle’s roll center. Trucks and vans roll more due to a higher center of gravity, so they need stiffer sway bars. Finally, if engineers soften the springs for comfort, they compensate by stiffening the sway bar.
Why Sway Bar Wear Matters
Even though sway bars seem simple, things can go wrong. That’s why every suspension job should include a sway bar inspection. The sway bar link is the most common failure point. It connects the bar to the suspension and often uses bushings or ball joints that wear out.
Rough roads speed up wear. Mounting bushings also wear out, which can cause noise or play in the system. Some small rear bars crack over time, especially in older vehicles.
If a customer complains about body roll or clunking noises, check the sway bar system. It plays a major role in vehicle stability and road safety.
