There’s a point in riding where performance stops being the bottleneck. You’ve got the skills, the bike, and the confidence to push harder. That’s usually when gear starts to matter a whole lot more than people expect. Helmets in particular tend to get overlooked once you’ve ticked the safety box, but spend enough time riding mixed terrain and dealing with heat and fatigue, and you’ll realize not all lids are built equal.
That’s where brands like Caberg come in. The Italian company has always leaned more toward function than flash. It’s not the loudest name in the helmet world, but it has a reputation for clever engineering and practical features. The vibe is very European. Clean, purpose-driven, and lowkey innovative rather than trying too hard to stand out.
The brand’s newest adventure helmet, dubbed the Tanami Carbon, fits right into that mindset, but it adds a bit more attitude. It’s an on and off-road helmet that’s clearly aimed at riders who don’t want to be boxed into one type of riding. Think ADV guys who mix highway miles with dirt, or anyone who rides in hot climates and wants flexibility without owning multiple helmets.

The big trick here is modularity, but not in the flip-up sense. The Tanami uses a magnetic system for its chin vent cover and rear extractor covers, so you can quickly switch between a more sealed, road-focused setup and a more open, airflow-heavy off-road configuration. It sounds simple, but in practice it means you can adapt the helmet in seconds depending on where you’re riding or how brutal the heat is.
Construction is a mix of carbon fiber and fiberglass, with two shell sizes to keep proportions tight across XS to XXL. Weight sits at around 3.2 pounds for the smaller shell and about 3.3 pounds for the larger one, which is solid for something this versatile. It’s not ultralight race-spec, but it’s light enough for long days without neck fatigue creeping in.

Ventilation is clearly a priority. You get a chin vent with a removable cover, a large top intake with dual openings, and rear extractors that help pull hot air out. Strip some of those covers off and airflow ramps up noticeably, especially when you’re riding slow trails or dealing with humid conditions.
It also plays nice with different riding setups. You can run it as a full-face with the visor and peak, remove parts for a more off-road feel, or even pair it with goggles if you ditch the visor. There’s even provision for routing a hydration tube through the chin bar, which tells you exactly who this helmet is built for.
On the road side, it’s properly equipped. You get a clear anti-scratch visor with a Pinlock 70 insert for fog control, plus an internal drop-down sun visor that’s easy to operate with gloves. The visor has a central locking system, so it won’t pop open unexpectedly at speed, but you can crack it slightly to manage airflow when needed.

Safety-wise, it meets ECE 22.06 standards and uses a double D-ring closure. One of the more unique features is Caberg’s SOS Medical ID system. It’s an NFC-based tag built into the helmet that stores your personal and medical info. In an emergency, responders can tap it with a smartphone and pull up critical details instantly, which is one of those features you hope you never need but makes a lot of sense.
Put it all together and the Tanami Carbon seems like a helmet designed by people who actually ride in varied conditions. It’s not trying to reinvent the category, but it refines the idea of a do-it-all ADV helmet in a way that’s properly useful.
