A new analysis by Auto Trader found that nearly two-thirds of car-related videos on TikTok contain misleading or potentially harmful advice, with car repair and cleaning hacks being the most concerning categories.

The study found that 90 per cent of car repair videos on the platform should not be attempted by inexperienced mechanics, as they could lead to further damage. Many of these videos offer do-it-yourself fixes for scratches or servicing tips, but Auto Trader cautioned that following such advice without proper training could prove costly.

Car cleaning videos were also flagged, with 81 per cent containing hacks that could damage a vehicle’s exterior or interior. Common suggestions included using toothpaste, coconut oil or even attaching a toilet brush to a drill to clean mats. Auto Trader advised drivers to use specialist cleaning products instead of household items that may contain harsh chemicals or be too abrasive.

Despite these concerns, the analysis found that some TikTok content offers helpful information. Auto Trader determined that 72 per cent of car maintenance videos provide useful guidance on preventive maintenance, such as checking oil levels, tire pressure and preparing for winter driving. Additionally, 68 per cent of driving tips videos — many aimed at learners — were found to be practical and created by certified instructors.

“TikTok is becoming one of the go-to search engines, offering inspiration and educational content from experienced creators,” said Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader. “But drivers should be wary, as many videos on TikTok are intended to shock audiences and gain engagement.”

Baker added that the group found “a staggering 59 per cent of the videos offer advice that is not recommended to drivers and could potentially leave your vehicle with more damage if followed.”

The company also advised lease vehicle owners to be particularly cautious of online car hacks, as damage from DIY fixes may not be covered under lease agreements, leading to unexpected charges.
