Has your customer ever said they need to replace that thing that hangs off their exhaust system? Pinning them down on what exactly they are talking about can be a journey. Since exhaust systems in most cases are about 10 feet long, there are many items they might be discussing. Sometimes they give us a clue and ask, why does my exhaust system have a big weight on it?
That is the defining description. They are talking about that large weight or two that manufacturers place strategically along many systems. These weights are usually cylindrical and hang off a rod that attaches by weld or bolt to the pipes.
How the Exhaust System Carries Vibrations
Do you remember the Beach Boys tune, Good Vibrations? Vibrations are good in music but bad in a vehicle. As a vehicle travels down the road, many sources can cause noise and vibrations. One main source is the engine and its components. The exhaust system connects directly to the engine. Engine dynamics transfer naturally to the entire exhaust system.
Because the system is long in many vehicles, it can amplify or exaggerate sounds and vibrations.
Dampeners Absorb Vibration for a Smoother Ride
The hanging weights, or dampeners, absorb those vibrations. That way, occupants do not notice the NVH—noise, vibration or harshness. These weights come in many sizes, configurations and designs.
Different frequency vibrations need different weight designs to cancel them out. Many repairs do not reinstall the original weight. However, these weights play a valuable role by keeping the ride quiet and vibration free.
