Salzburg AG integrates ChargePost systems into virtual power plant to provide ancillary services alongside EV charging

Salzburg AG has become the first company to deploy battery-integrated fast charging infrastructure that simultaneously provides electric vehicle charging and grid stability services. The Austrian energy provider successfully prequalified ADS-TEC Energy’s ChargePost system for participation in Austria’s ancillary services market, integrating the charging stations into its virtual power plant to help maintain grid frequency.

The ChargePost system combines ultra-fast DC charging of up to 300 kW with battery capacity of up to 201 kWh, while connecting to standard low-voltage grid infrastructure. Its bidirectional storage and energy management enable peak shaving, reduced grid connection costs, and full-power EV charging capabilities regardless of local grid capacity constraints.

“To accelerate growth, fast charging has to evolve from being a cost centre,” Thomas Speidel, Founder and Chief Executive of ADS-TEC Energy, said. “With intelligent buffering and stable grid behaviour, systems like ChargePost open up new flexibility in the operation of charging infrastructure. Our work with Salzburg AG shows how high-power charging and grid stability can go hand in hand.”

Salzburg AG has committed to expanding the deployment with 20 additional ChargePost systems following a tender award to ADS-TEC Energy. The prequalification marks the first time battery-integrated fast charging infrastructure has met the technical requirements to provide ancillary services, a capability traditionally limited to large-scale standalone battery storage systems.
