Lidl Austria has used electric trucks for daily operations since 2024, and sys it wants to continue electrifying its fleet. This year, 14 battery-electric eActros 600 trucks were delivered to it, with the other 42 set to arrive by mid-2027. What it means is that, currently, the retailer is on track to have 20 of the trucks operating delivery routes by mid-2027.
Accompanying the fleet electrification is the installation of new electric truck charging infrastructure, which has seen Lidl open a truck charging park at its logistics site in Laakirchen in Upper Austria. This enables the vehicles to use fully renewable energy to charge, some of which is generated locally using photovoltaic solar systems.
Speaking at the charging park’s opening, Daimler Truck Austria CEO Jens Tittel said: “We are very proud of the successful market launch of the eActros 600 in Austria. We are also delighted to support Lidl on its journey towards sustainable transport. This demonstrates that electrification in national long-haul and distribution transport is becoming a reality.”
Globally, Lidl currently holds a ‘Net Zero by 2050’ policy, which has seen it deploy electric trucks in several different markets. The eActros 600 appears to be a favourite of the grocer, which has deployed it in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. The company has also announced plans to electrify its company car fleet, such as in Belgium and Luxembourg.
